Going green
Mayor Villaraigosa understands that protecting Los Angeles's future means finding ways to make the city the greenest in America while protecting economic development. He has consistently found creative solutions to environmental challenges and used green technologies to form the backbone of a plan for sustainable development into the future. For example:
- Mayor Villaraigosa has cut air pollution, fought global warming, and reduced LA’s dependence on foreign oil by quadrupling the city’s use of renewable energy with the county’s most significant expansion of solar energy production and largest municipally owned wind farm in the United States.
- Under Mayor Villaraigosa's "Green LA" plan, LA has set an ambitious goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 35% below 1990 levels and is on target to exceed international standards four years ahead of schedule
- The Mayor's policies put LA on prime footing to become the center of solar energy development nationwide, and resulting rapid growth in solar energy production will create up to 400 jobs for every 10 megawatts of energy produced.
